Mixed Media Canvas – Happiness in the NOW

30 Dec

Hi all!

Hope you are having lots of fun this festive period. : )

Mixed media art can get messy yet it is the mess that brings the fun of creating.. And that’s what I find the thrill of doing.. : )

Ok.. Let’s get started how I created this…

Canvas - Happiness in the now

Materials list:

12 by 12 Canvas
Off-white card stock
Patterned papers
Ribbons / Laces
Additional embellishments – beads, rhinestones etc
Alpha thickers
Fine point black pen

Mists used:
Memories Mists – Fruit Punch
Mister Huey’s – Boss Red, Powder Blue and Heirloom Blue

Textured paste
Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Metallic Acrylic Craft Paint
Faber Castell Gelatos

Tools used:
Paint brushes
Foam brush

Adhesives used:
Ranger Glossy Accents
Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium (Matte)
Glue dots
Foam tape
White glue

Step 1: Glide the gelato of your colour choice onto the canvas. Spray water to the foam brush and water down the colour and paint the whole canvas. Apply more Gelato if you want a darker shade and just enough water to smoothen out the colour.

Step 2: Apply a layer of multi-medium after the gelato colour has dried. This intention is to protect the colour from running as gelato is water soluble. Let it dry.

Step 3: Draw a girl silhouette sitting down on a off-white card stock. Mine was almost 12″ in height. Cut it out.

Step 4: Glide your desired human skin colour onto the face, arms and legs of the silhouette. Spray some water to a small paint brush and water down the colour gently so as not to tear the card stock. Spray more water to the brush when it becomes dry. But not overly wet as it might weaken the card stock texture and result in tear. Let it dry.

Step 5: Use a fine point black pen to outline the face.
Cut a piece of patterned paper for the silhouette’s top. Adhere with white glue. Make a slit at the in between the legs so as to insert the ribbon / lace later.

Step 6: For the hair part, mix the texture paste with your desired hair colour. For mine, I used metallic colour and it turned out a dark brown colour for the hair. Apply the paste to the hair area using random strokes to create the curls. Let dry.

Step 7: Spray the canvas with the colour mists randomly. Swipe the colours with a toothbrush until you are happy with the outcome. Let it dry completely.

Step 8: Insert the ribbons / laces that add will act as the silhouette’s skirt. I used glue dots to hold the ribbons / laces down. Put foam tape behind the silhouette to raise it up
Apply glossy accents onto the foam tape as I am concerned the foam tapes’adhesive may not be strong enough and lasting. Stick it to the canvas.

Step 9: Finally, add a sentiment and more embellishments to dress up the canvas.
